Virtual Reality: Here, There, and Everywhere.
Humans have traveled mentally to somewhere other than where they are physically for eons. Our capacities to dream and daydream have been enhanced by communicative media beginning long ago with language and more recently via digital technology. The latter not only provides us with an enhanced capacity to travel virtually, but to spend substantial amounts of time “existing” virtually. Social psychologists have used non-digital virtual environment techniques for decades, and more recently have begun to appreciate the value of digital virtual environment technology for research purposes. A general model of social influence within virtual environments will be discussed in terms of its value for the design of digital agents and avatars and for validational research.
