Dr. Marianella Casasola, Cornell University http://homepage.psy.utexas.edu/homepage/Group/CohenLab/casasola.html The same path of development? Spatial Language and Infants’ Spatial Categorization Early cross-linguistic differences in young children’s acquisition of spatial language have raised interesting questions about the relative contribution of infants’ perceptual and cognitive abilities versus linguistic input in the development of infants’ spatial concepts. Results from several experimental and semi-naturalistic studies will highlight how infants learn to form a spatial category and the experiences that contribute to the development of this ability. Several studies also will address developmental changes in the intricate interplay between cognition and language in infants’ spatial categorization, examining how the effect of language on infants’ spatial categorization varies with infants’ own acquisition of spatial language. Together, the studies suggest that infants’ learning of spatial categories is not a one-size fits all. The relative contribution of cognition versus language in infants’ spatial categories depends on the spatial category in question. Although infants’ nonlinguistic abilities are sufficient in forming some spatial categories, experience with language can aid infants in forming other spatial categories. |
