Dr. Marc Schröder, Senior Researcher at DFKI GmbH Open-source research platforms for multimodal, emotion-oriented interactive systems: SEMAINE API and MARY TTS Emotion-oriented interactive software systems are progressing in the research world, but current technology is fragmented due to custom island solutions. In this talk I will argue in favour of standard interfaces and reusable components as means for helping the research community make joint progress. I will present two open-source research platforms developed in this spirit. First, the SEMAINE API is a component integration platform for emotion-oriented, multimodal interactive systems, using standard representation formats such as EMMA, BML and SSML at component interfaces. I will describe the SEMAINE system, an audio-visual dialogue system with a focus on non-verbal analysis and synthesis. I will show how new emotion-aware systems can be built in a simple manner by combining existing and new components through the SEMAINE API. Second, MARY TTS is a state-of-the-art, modular, multilingual speech synthesis platform with support for adding new languages and voices. Its unit selection and HMM-based synthesis voices can be used in audio-visual synthesis contexts because timing information is available for lip synchronisation and gesture alignment.
