Rolf Zwaan (Erasmus University, Rotterdam) Multi-modal integration in language comprehension Abstract: Current theories suggest that language comprehension is a kind of externally-guided mental simulation. I will start off by providing an overview of comprehension theories from the past 30 years or so, thereby situating simulation theories in their proper line of ancestry, from propositional networks to situation models. I will then describe my own brand of simulation theory, focusing on the interplay between sensory representations and linguistic input. In the second half of my talk, I will discuss empirical work from my lab, spanning the past ten years, concluding with a number of very recent studies. Collquium "Language and Cognition" |
