Hörsaal 8 Diane Pecher Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam The role of image schemas Conceptual representations are grounded in the sensory-motor systems by way of simulations of embodied experiences (Barsalou, 1999). There is now a lot of evidence that this is the case for concrete concepts. The representation of abstract concepts, however, still presents a puzzle. Abstract concepts might consist of several components, including situational information, introspective states, relational information, and image schemas (Barsalou & Wiemer-Hastings, 2005; Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). In a series of experiments, we have investigated the role of image schemas for abstract concepts such as category membership, similarity, and power. The results suggest that image schemas are activated quickly, automatically, and are a central part of abstract concepts. Diane Pecher |
